When one key just isn't enough
Most people don't think about spare keys until they need one urgently. A family member locked out, a cleaner who needs access while you're at work, a second set lost somewhere between Millfield and the city centre. By the time it matters, it matters a lot.
The other situation we see regularly is a newly fitted lock with only one key in the door. You move into a place in SR4 or SR6, the previous owner hands over a single key, and you're immediately relying on that one bit of metal to keep your home accessible. One spare is not a luxury. It's just sensible.
How we handle key cutting in Sunderland
When you're booking any lock fitting with us, tell us how many keys you need at the same time. Every lock we supply comes with between two and five keys depending on the make and model, but if you want additional cuts done on the day, ring ahead so the engineer arrives with the right kit. Not every job requires an on-site cutter, and if you call it out last-minute we might not have it with us.
For standard keys on Yale, Chubb, or multipoint locks, most of the time we can sort it in one visit. It's quick and straightforward.
Restricted high-security keys are a different matter, and that's not a complaint, it's the whole idea. Brands like ABS, Ultion and Mul-T-Lock build their systems so blanks can't be copied at a high street key bar. You need the correct authorisation, the right blank ordered in from the supplier, and a proper cut on the correct machine. We handle all of that, but it does mean a follow-up visit rather than same-day. For customers in Southwick, Boldon, Washington or anywhere else in our area, that second visit is usually within a few working days of the order going in.
What to expect on price and timing
Standard key cutting is charged on our labour rate plus the cost of the blank, with VAT added. It's not expensive, and we'll quote it over the phone before you book. Call us on 0191 349 6413 and we'll tell you exactly what it'll cost for the number of keys you need.
Restricted keys cost more because the blanks themselves are more expensive and the authorisation process is part of what you're paying for. Again, we'll give you a clear figure before anything is ordered. No surprises on the invoice.
Locks Local has been working across Sunderland since 2014, so we know the area well, from the older terraced housing stock around Hendon and Pallion to the newer builds out towards Ryhope and Silksworth. The lock types vary, the key profiles vary, and we come prepared. If you're not sure what you've got on your door, a photo sent over or a quick description on the phone is usually enough for us to work it out before we arrive.
