uPVC Door Repair vs Replace Cost | The Real Ten-Year Maths

A new uPVC door costs somewhere between £800 and £1,800 fitted in Sunderland, depending on the fabricator and the spec. A gearbox replacement costs £120 to £180. A new cylinder costs £60 to £120. Most homeowners who call me about a stiff or failing uPVC door haven't done that sum. They ask me straight away whether they need a new door. Usually they don't.

What Actually Fails on a uPVC Door

The door itself, the PVC frame and the glass unit, rarely causes the problem. What fails is the hardware. The multipoint locking gearbox (most doors in SR1 to SR6 are fitted with GU, Fuhr, Maco, or Winkhaus mechanisms) takes the most punishment. It's lifting and driving steel hooks and bolts every single day. Over five to eight years the cam followers wear, the springs weaken, and the handle starts to feel heavy or the door won't pull up to lock.

The cylinder is the second failure point. On a lot of homes in Hendon, Millfield, and Southwick I still see basic five-pin euro cylinders that offer almost no snap resistance. Even a decent cylinder like an Avocet ABS or Ultion only has a rated service life of around ten years with daily use.

Hinges are third. Adjustable flag hinges go out of alignment. The door drops, scrapes the frame, and the gearbox has to work harder. A hinge adjustment takes fifteen minutes.

The Ten-Year Cost Table

The figures assume a mid-range uPVC door from a local Sunderland fabricator, a Maco or GU replacement gearbox (branded, not a pattern part), and an Avocet ABS or Ultion cylinder each time. Emergency callouts add a callout fee on top of parts and labour, usually £50 to £80 depending on time of day.

The serviced door wins by a wide margin, and you're still using the same frame.

When Replacement Actually Makes Sense

I'll tell you when it doesn't make sense to repair. If the frame itself is warped, cracked at the corners, or the glass unit has blown (you'll see condensation between the panes), then the fabric of the door is compromised. Repair costs start stacking up and you're putting good money into a failing shell.

Same story if the door is an old single-point lock, no multipoint gearbox at all. Those doors usually predate PAS24 and won't meet your insurer's requirements. A Roker or Fulwell terrace with a pre-2000 uPVC door and a BS3621 mortice deadlock bolted on as an afterthought is worth replacing. Not because of the lock, but because the frame geometry won't take a proper multipoint upgrade cleanly.

If the door is less than fifteen years old, in reasonable frame condition, and the problem is a stiff handle or a lock that won't engage without lifting the handle hard, it's almost certainly the gearbox. That's a repair job, not a replacement.

What a Sensible Spend Looks Like

Get the gearbox replaced with a branded part. GU, Fuhr, Maco, and Winkhaus are all worth specifying by name. Pattern-copy gearboxes are cheaper on the day and fail faster. While the door is apart, fit a TS007 3-star rated cylinder if you haven't already. Ultion and Avocet ABS both sit at that standard and cost £50 to £80 for the cylinder itself.

Book a hinge check at the same time. If the door's been dropping, the hinges will have been working against the gearbox. Align them, and the whole system lasts longer.

Do that at year three or five, repeat the cylinder at year eight or nine, and a door bought when your kids were in primary school will still be working when they leave home.
